Turtle vs. tortoise for a pet?

I have REALLY fallen in love with both tortoises and turtles. Not handling them a Lot isn't much of a problem and money can be saved if need be (I know tortoises are more expensive). Can anyone tell me where to research, or which is preferable? The pet store near me has red eared sliders and Roman tortoises (I think they're called)...I've had reptiles/amphibians before, but never a turtle/tortoise.

Websites? Books? Advice? :)

I worked in a pet store for a while and found that tortoises are the better pet. They are easier to maintain and have a cleaner diet. Tortoises eat fruits and vegetables, and turtles can eat pellets but we also fed them live feeder fish, so it can get messy. You also don't have to change their Water that they swim in, because tortoises don't swim. Turtles smell horrible and the tortoises barely smell at all as long as you clean the cage out at least once a week. Whereas with the turtles you would have to clean the tank and the water everyday or they will stink.
