****Adding real plants to aquarium**?

I was thinking of adding some small plants like dwarf baby tears or hairgrass to get rid of those fake small plants I have. I was also thinking of getting a camboda and a Anubias Barteri any suggestions for this? Do I really need to buy substrate for these plants? What can I do to make them look as best as possible?

I was also thinking of making a planted aquarium(switching the fake plants) how much will this cost for a good set up in a 29 gallon tank
I was also wondering if the plants can mess up my Water chemistry and how can I prevent it? I read somewhere that I had to cut off the old leaves that are rotten or did not look good. About how long does each of the plats last?
Also, what is the co2 thing used for?

yes for some of the plants you will want good substrate. For water chemistry use an inert substrate, easily found is fluorite. With any plant substrate i would suggest taking the tank apart (do not kill the bacteria in filter though). I would put the plant substrate first then add plants (all this DRY!!!) then cover with 1-2" of gravel so that plant substrate d/n cloud up water also do not wash the substrate in this case you want it to be bone dry. Then SLOWLY pour water in, i use a small diameter gravel vacuum or airline tubing to put water into tank and dont just use the bucket to pour the water in you will cloud up tank. The inert substrate will not change the water chemistry and an inert substrate will not leak chemicals into water like iron and only a plant can take it in via roots. However, there are plants that dont require substrate at all but they will thrive and look better with it.

With some plants i will continuously cut them to within 1-2" and regrow a new plant because leaves do die and its just better looking. I would suggest against cambomba only use sparingly and i mean only one tiny stalk, fish cant swim through it (only good for fry) and to much will block light and leaves of cabomba will litter your gravel and filter.
