What caused my California King Snake to strike?
My son has owned a baby California King Snake for about 8 months. He recently left to go to boot camp and left the snake with me. Even though I have handled her before and feed her, when I tried to hold her she just became agitated, rattled her tail, and striked at me twice. What caused this?
Snakes (especially snakes that are oly occassionally handled) feel defensive in their own cage.
I have found event the most aggressive snakes will handle extremely calm-like once you get the snake out of the cage..........i.e. not messing with it is in its home.
It just sounds like the snake has been handled less and less and has become less tame as of consequence.
Try this : take a metal clothe hanger and cut it so it stretches out in a long line of a wire.....now, bend it in on itself so it's half the length it was...................now, bend that into the shape of a candy cane(hook)..................now you can "scoop" the snake out of its cage and transfer into your hand easier.
