i personally own several species of snakes but the balls and albino pueblin milksnakes are my two faveorites. ball pythons are picky, but if you learn their little quirks, they are awesome. i assume your getting a young one. i have a rather new ball that's a bit over three feet that is happily living in a 20 gallon tank. people assume that because they are getting snakes they need this huge cage for them-this is not the case. the less territory they have to protect means less stress on the snake. for my smallest in the 20, i have a huge pool/Water dish for her, a cave, and some fake plants. as for substrate, stick with reptibark. now feeding-i feed frozen. the day before feeding, i take out however many mice or rats i need, put them in my rodent drawer and let them thaw naturally(don't ever nuke them). if you are going to feed live, watch to make sure the food doen't attack the snake-it does happen which is why i go frozen. the general rule of thumb for snake feeding is to feed them in a seperate cage. not always the best idea for balls. i have tried time and again to feed some of mine in a feeder cage without luck. i finally did resort to feeding in their own cage and they promptly ate. they wouldn't eat elsewhere because i took them out of their comfort zone. i put an under tank heater on one side of the cage that has her cave. the pool/waterdish is on the otherside-this is also the side i put her heat light on. keep the humidity a little above 50% or more during a shed and mist them down 3 or 4 times a day. i also have a warm tank with wet moss that i put them in for an hour at a time 1 or 2 times a day unless they are really good soakers. balls are also known for being escape artists, so make sure you have a vey secure cage. my really big snakes actually have little closet like rooms with lighting and water as well. i also feed the big guys in their pens. make sure there is a warm side of the tank (90-95+) and the cooler side (80-90). this is the side i keep the water on. try feeding weekly in a feeding tank, but if it wont eat, feed it in the cage. my little one went a good 5 months without feeding until i broke down and started to feed her in her cage. they will usually stop eating during a shed, after a move, or when they are settling in to their new digs. anything that can stress them out can affect their eating habits-i keep all of my snakes in two quiet rooms designed just for them. hope this helps-get back to me with any other specific questions.good luck
