A clean one is necessary for the health and well being of your engine. They do not cost all that much. In fact, many mechanics will charge you much more than they are worth so your best bet is buying one from a department store like Wal-Mart for a fraction of the cost. Saving money can be a really important issue for many people living in an unpredictable economy. Those tens and fifteens quickly add up. Make a point to jot down a list of the simple car maintenance tasks that can be performed at home. From oil change to air filter, there is so much that you can do yourself. Park your car in the shade before you change your air filter. Allow the engine some time to cool down if you have been driving it recently. You do not want to reach in there when it's hot and get burned. Pop the hood and take a good look around. It is a great idea to get to know some of the engine components. The air filter is found in a casing that is usually made up of black plastic. It is in the center of the engine in most vehicles though in some it may actually be off to the side instead.

You will likely need to use a screwdriver or a butter knife to pop the casing open. You need to get inside to access the used air filter. Pry the casing open carefully so as not to wreck anything. Once you get the casing open, take the old filter out and take a good look at it to see how clean or dirty it really is. Replace it with the new one, putting it in the same way you found the old one. Put the casing back together and then tidy it up if it is obviously dirty. Changing your air filter is just that easy. Make a point to do it on a regular basis to keep your car in top running condition.
