Cichlid Aggression - How to Handle Aggressive Cichlids
Many cichlid species are known for their extreme aggression. Thus, a vital part of cichlid fish care is understanding how to control and curb their aggressive behavior. While it is not possible to stop their aggression entirely, there are certain steps you can take to influence their behavior.
Firstly, you should always attempt to keep cichlids of the same size together. The rationale here is that a larger cichlid will be able to dominate over a small cichlid when both of them are equal in terms of aggression. You don't want that to happen as the smaller cichlids will quickly die out as they cannot defend themselves.
Thus, you need to research on the size of the species before you buy them. Most of the cichlids sold in fish stores look about the same size, but when they are allowed to reach their full adult size, the differences become apparent.
Secondly, you should avoid keeping cichlids that are similar in color or markings. Due to survival reasons, cichlids are very hostile towards their own species or other similar looking fishes. The rationale here is that similar looking fishes will fight for the same food, territory and partners. Thus, it is recommended that you only keep one pair per species, one male and one female.
Besides color, you should also watch out for similar markings. For example, if you have a vertically striped cichlid, it is best not to keep another vertically striped cichlid, even if they are both of different species and color.
Aggression in cichlids is unavoidable as it is part of their natural instinct, thus you can only try to influence their behavior. Level the playing field by keeping cichlids of the same size and aggression together. This way, no party will get a distinct advantage and dominate over the other. You should also avoid keeping cichlids that are similar in color or markings together.
