Anyone out there who has expertise on corn snakes?
hi! My dad is considering getting me a baby corn snake for a late christmas present. I'm a newbie to snake care. (but not reptiles in general, had a mountain anole a while back) But of course I need to be informed on how to take care of the little guy. I've heard various statements on cage size, bedding, food, heating, and I need straight out FACTS. So any reptile experts out there with some good websites or advice? It would mean a Lot. Thanks. xoxo.
Congratulations!
Corn snakes will grow to approximately 5 feet, and can live ten years or more.
You should enclose it in a 20L terrarium with a secure top, put down aspen, felt, or low-dust substrate. Your snake will need a heat mat and a lamp on one end of the tank, nothing at the other end (warm side/cool side), a hide box, and a large Water dish for soaking.
A thermometer for each end is a good idea to monitor the heat gradient.
Snakes eat approximately once a week. Choose its food based on its size-a baby snake will eat a pinkie or fuzzy mouse, a juvenile snake will eat a fuzzy or hopper mouse, and an adult snake will eat adult mice or tiny rats. The best way is to not feed your snake anything bigger than the largest part of its body.
Clean the cage once weekly and spot clean as necessary.
There are many good books at your local petstores, and you can google "corn snake care" for any information I may have left out.
