Can Water snakes bite you under water?

I live in Indiana. That I know of, we have cottonmouth snakes and some others that inhabit water and are poisonous. I have heard that water snakes do not and can not bite you while under water. That they can only bite you if they have their head out of the water. Does anyone know for a fact if this is true or not?

Yes, they absolutely can. I have a friend who was bitten by a midland water snake underwater. However, I don't usually see cottonmouths just hanging out in the water. If I see them in the water, they are swimming, not lurking. More often than not I see them in piles of brush, on driftwood, etc., that is near water or on water.
