Mixing species can be done successfully, but that's like saying you can smoke and still die of natural causes. It isn't worth the risk. Even species that come from the same place don't actually "live" together in the wild, they can always get away from each other if needs be. Forcing them both into a cage is suicide for them. Plus they both have different needs, like temperature for example, and you can't give them both ideal conditions in one cage.

Different species can only co-inhabit an area where they have different niches. That means they can't both thrive in exactly the same conditions - if they could, natural selection would have picked one off already. Remember that they don't need company and even if they did, a member of another species wouldn't make them feel good, all it's going to do is stress them out.

So basically it can be done with the risk of one or both of them dying, and it's up to you to make the choice.
