what is the best filter system for a 100 gallon freshwater tank?
I am getting a used tank this weekend from a friend, and it has an undergravel system. I have heard many horror stories about those...
Undergravel systems are a time bomb..they work but there old technology and i would avoid using it all costs..
A canister filter is perfect....with a secondary HOB on top (like an aquaclear) for custom media uses and Water airation.
In the canister just put sponges and bio-media, that way you only have to break it down 3-4 times a year. Don't put anything in it that needs replacing every month is my point.\
A tank that big aswell i would use sand not gravel, it keeps the tank cleaner and you don't have to vacuum it, which is nice, just gently stir with your hand once every couple months.
