Ice Fishing For Pike - 2 Exciting Fishing Techniques

If you are fishing for pike it is best done in the winter months. This is why Pike fishing is synonymous with ice fishing. Winter is the best time to fish for pike as the lakes and ponds are frozen over and the fish come to the warmer surface to feed when the sun is up. So if you are a beginner it is time you got yourself acquainted with the many methods of ice fishing.

The Northern Pike is the most sought after species of pike during the ice fishing season. This fish is good for everything from mounting, eating and even angling as the Northern pike is known to put up a great fight when it is hooked – if it is hooked. The other fish angled for is the Kakanee Salmon and here is where the methods of ice fishing come into effect. The right method needs to be used to fish for a particular species of fish.

Now when it comes to fishing for Pike you can best try your luck during the ice fishing winter months when the fish is sluggish and inactive. It is during this time the fish will bite almost anything that is within easy reach. They actually do not want to move around much and wish for the food to float into their mouths. Here is where you can actually hook the Pike with almost any bait. But when caught the Pike can put up a ferocious fight so make sure you are not on thin ice so to speak.

Another fish you can angle quite easily is the Walleye. This fish comes to the surface of the frozen Water because it is easier to see and catch food. And since food is scarce in the cold water the walleys and pike will bite just about anything that looks like food to them.

Some Ice Fishing Methods:

1. Jigging:
A jig is artificial bait that looks like live fish food that the fish are used to eating. Most jigs are very brightly colored and imitate the way live bait moves and behaves in the water. Some of the jigs are scented so that fish such as walleye can smell them instead of sighting them in the water.

2. Tip Off:
This is another method of ice fishing. In this kind of fishing anglers raise a flag from a special device to tell other anglers that fish are biting at a particular location. This is where the name of this method of fishing comes from, to 'tip off' other anglers about good fishing spots. Another unique thing about this kind of method is that there is no reel is used and the fish needs to be brought in by hand. So use this method to catch the smaller fish and do not try it for larger fish if you want to keep your fingers on your hand. So happy ice fishing!
