Fluval Lab Series
Fluval Lab Series
For a saltwater tank with a fluval 305 what would you recommend?
I got a fluval 305 filter today for my soon to be set up saltwater tank. The general order for the filter in a freshwater setup is for bottom to be either prefilter or carbon then second to be either carbon or biomax and the top to be biomax. I'm wondering if there is a better configuration for a saltwater setup. Also is ther a worthwhile difference in getting the lab series carbon etc.
Im actually writing an article about this on my website as we speak.
But typically freshwater and saltwater filtration is basically the same with a few differences on saltwater.
There are plenty of opinions on how filtration should be setup, for example some reefers dont believe in having mechanical and others feel no biological. But this is up to you to decided.
Typically I have mechanical first, I use blue bonded filter pads because they are cheap but filter floss or other media is fine. Then I usually run chemical filtration. Carbon, ammonia remover etc... What is different about saltwater media is the use of phosphate removers. Phosphates are not the best thing for saltwater tanks and reef tanks specifically. I would suggest adding some sort of phosphate remover in your chemical filtration media. Next would come biological filtration. You can use ceramic media, personally I use a mixture of biohome and live rock rubble.
No one argues that live rock will provide biological filtration, but some choose not to add it to their filtration system. My personal opinion would be to add some live rock rubble as your biological filtration media.
IMO carbon is carbon. The most common being chemipure etc... I personally use seachem seagel which is a mixture of carbon, phosphate remover, and ammonia remover.
