Fish selection in a nano style (small) marine aquarium

Here are some considerations and advice you should know before stocking a nano type reef aquarium.
I have given a list of fish you must resist and avoid purchasing.

Firstly I will address the considerations you should take when buying fish, then I will give examples of unsuitable fish for small reef aquariums.

Considerations

Fish size. If the fish your buying is going to grow too big for your aquarium, what would be the point in buying it in the first place? It will need plenty of space to swim. A small aquarium just would not be suitable. How would you like to live in a Dog kennel?
Temperament. Just like us fish can have a bad temperament. Some are bullies, some territorial. Again this is no good in a small aquarium or with a fish that can't protect their self.
Eating habits. All fish eat different things. Some eat meat whilst others like plants such as seaweed or worse, prized corals. You need to research these habits and see if it is compatible within your Aquariums inhabitants.There are plenty of foods available so meeting requirements is not difficult.
Compatibility. Will your fish get on? Some fish are shoaling and need to be kept together in groups. No good for a small aquarium that will only home a few fish.

Types of fish

Tangs. You must resist this purchase, I find it difficult to avoid the purchase. I love the look of tangs but they are not suitable because they grow big and need plenty of swimming space.
Damsels. Many recommend these as ideal starter fish. They are very hardy and will tolerate most things thrown at them. They have a bad temperament and bully other fish. I would strongly advise against them.
Mandarins. These are beautiful, really striking color's and fantastic temperament ,but the reason you should avoid buying them is because it is difficult to provide food for them. They feed on very small creatures found in mature aquariums. Without this food they just starve to death, Larger aquariums are recommended, but it is not unheard of small nano aquarium keepers to successfully keep these in a mature Reef Aquarium.

There are many other fish to avoid but these are some of the most common fish found to be incorrectly housed. By using the considerations guide you shouldn't go for wrong.
