Best Flake food?
Does anyone have any serious opinions on what the best staple flake food is for tropical fish? I have been using Nutrafin Max Colour enhancing flake food for almost two years, and i was thinking about trying something else. Any suggestions (and maybe a reason why) would be appreciated!! Thanks
Nutrafin is actually one of the better foods on the market, as it has a low ash content. The ash content is the amount of undigestable product in a food. Other really high quality foods are Ocean Nutrition and New Life Spectrum (which was developed by Pablo Tepoot).

Tetra, by the way, isn't a good flake food. It's made from mostly fish meal (take a fish, cut off everything for human consumption, cut off everything for animal consumption and bait, take what's left, grind it up into a past, dry it out, rewet it, spread it over a hot wheel in a thin sheet, and scrape it off as it dries). Fish meal really isn't nutritionally sound, and Tetra has a really high ash content compared to other foods as a result. Tetra used to be a good product name, but not anymore. You'd be better served feeding something like Nutrafin which costs pretty much the same price as Tetra but has a much higher nutritional value and much lower ash content. Although, really, you'd be best served feeding a variety diet to your fish including elements that are more natural to it (say, terrestrial and aquatic vegetation to mbuna algae scrapers).
By the by, if you're looking to enhance the colors of freshwater fish (especially South American cichlids), you can enrich their diet with spirulina. Kent makes this super easy with a product called Freshwater Zoe. It's a spirulina soak for your fish's food (either defrost frozen foods in it or you can put a few drops on flake foods before feeding).
