are spandex stockings safe for aquarium use???
I have a 10 gallon aquarium with a large external box filter. It takes those large glass wool filter bags filled with activated carbon. For some reason the wool keeps breaking apart within about 2 weeks, and spills the carbon all over the tank. It’s a real pain to clean up! I read that it’s possible to use nylon stockings filled with peat to soften the Water. But I was wondering if it is safe to use an old stocking that is about 15% spandex to wrap around the filter cartridge to stop it from spilling carbon everywhere. I asked my dad, and he said the spandex breaks down over time, and can be toxic to the fish, but a second opinion can't hurt!

Nylon stockings are great to use to hold carbon in the tank. By the time the spandex would break down in your tank, your fish will be VERY old. It takes years. Not days or weeks. I use them quite a bit myself. Spandex in this form is non toxic.
