pet corn snake
Is it wierd that my pet corn snake has started laying eggs in september?
I got a corn snake for my birthday a couple weeks ago and yesterday she laid 1 egg and today she laid 12!. I didnt know she was pregnant. she wasnt eating, i thought it was just nearves, she shed her skin, i didnt know when she shed it last. i woke up 1 morning and there was an egg in the Water bowl. when i put her in a box with spahgnum moss the next day, she laid 12.
It's a little off the traditional schedule but is nothing serious to worry about - it of course depends when she was put with a male! Although traditionally corn snakes lay eggs through the early summer months, if she was only introduced to a male 6 weeks ago and was not bred previously, then she would be laying eggs right now.
I know breeders who deliberately don't breed their snakes in the spring and simulate an artificial climate change to make the snakes breed and lay before christmas - as that's when there is a huge peak in demand of baby corns... so they will lay any time of year if they're bred at a specific time and the temperatures are good.
Alternatively this could be a second clutch, which some snakes can perform. Obviously the shop where you bought her was keeping opposite sexes in together which is bad practice as people do not want to buy pregnant pets, and although you can easily throw the eggs away, the strain of pregnancy will affect the snake, especially a second clutch.
She probably won't eat for a week and will shed again fairly soon but make sure you do get her feeding as soon as possible and if you were intending to hibernate her, I would strongly recommend checking her weight and making sure she is up to scratch. If you don't want to breed her next year just keep feeding her up through the winter and she should bounce back from the late eggs fairly easily.
If she continues to not eat after a weeks time you may want to consider a vet in case she is egg bound or there are other problems as it's very important that she begins to gain weight and starts eating regular.
Good luck - there are lots of corn snake resource sites out there to help you along too.
