Glow in the dark calcium sand for hermit crabs?
I bought some calcium sand for my hermit crabs today. I didn't realize it was glow in the dark sand until I brought it home. Is that bad for them? Also, This sand says that it's especially for reptiles but hermit crabs are crustaceans. Hermit crabs use calcium sand too though and they have glow in the dark sand for hermit crabs too, so is this sand ok or should I exchange it?
Most products marketed for hermit crabs are crap and will do more harm to your hermies than good(if it does any good). Sponges, painted shells, and hermit crab salt mixes are prefect examples of crap sold. Sponges breed harmful bacteria, are not good for maintaining humidity, and cannot substitute a bowl. The method used for stuffing hermies in painted shells is extremely cruel, most forced to go through this will die, and the paint itself is toxic to the crabs. Hermit crab salt mixes don't hold salinity well.
I'd exchange(preferable return it and just buy a bag of play sand or eco earth) the calci sand.
As a substrate, calci sand isn't the best one could buy. It's been known to clump rather easily. The stuff that makes your sand glow in the dark is probably toxic to your hermies anyway.
Play sand and eco earth are much better options for your tat. Both are great substrates and much cheaper than pet store sand.
