How do reptiles survive in cold climates?
I'm just really curious. What does it mean to be cold-blooded? If reptiles need outside warmth to regulate their body temperature, how do they survive at night?
Not entirely true, yes reptiles will use locational temperature gradients to increase their temp. or lower them.
At night they become extremely lethargic until they warm up in the morning slowing respiration and circulation during these times. or hibernate during extended periods of cold.
They also have another trick, large pythons can use muscular movement to increase temperature, nesting pythons do this to warm eggs, shivering
Temperature gradients are a poor method, captured or pet reptiles often burn themselves just trying to keep warm on the hot rocks and surfaces of the enclosures. They have very little actual surface feeling and use the temperature of their blood to determine conditions.
