How large can I blow up a photograph taken with a 6.1 megapixel pentax SLR camera?
I want a photo mural for my wall.... How large can I blow up a pic before the quality would be poor to an average viewer? I was hoping 4 by 6 feet.
I don't plan on doing it myself.... I plan on having my friend take the picture and then having the professional photo-shop do the printing.
That's just not gonna happen. I'd say 16x20 is the maximum for decent resolution and even that is in the area of 150 dpi, which can only be viewed from a couple of feet away. 4x6 feet is going to wind up with pixels big enough to see across the room. It would be something like 40 dpi.
For 4x6 FEET at 100 dpi, you would need to start with about a 35 MP camera. The only way to approach this size would be to get a decent transparency of your subject and scan it at a very high resolution, like 7200 dpi. I scan at 4000 dpi and I have had a few 20x30 INCH prints made and I'd say they are pretty much at the limit already. This would yield about 175 dpi, so you could go bigger, but not much.
