Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary- Wilderness At Its Best!
Wildlife Sanctuaries of South India occupy a prized place on the tourist map of India. Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular wildlife destinations of South India. Located in Tamil Nadu, this sanctuary is a also a Tiger Reserve. It is a home to a variety of flora and fauna. Tourists from far and wide come to the sanctuary to quench their wildlife thirst.
Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is a fascinating jewel of Tamil Nadu when it comes to wildlife. It is a home to varied flora and fauna, which beckon tourists from all over the world. One of the finest attractions of South India, the sanctuary also boasts of picturesque surroundings. It occupies a wonderful place on the north side of the Nilgiri Hills(Blue Mountains) in Nilgiri district. The sanctuary is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
The sanctuary is also a Tiger Reserve and has five sections- Masinagudi, Thepakadu, Mudumalai, Kargudi and Nellakota. It sprawls over an area of 321 sq km.

The Mammals:
Asian elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Gaur, Hyena, Jackal, Sloth Bear, Sambar, Chital, Muntjac, Mouse Deer, Wild Boar, Stripe-necked Mongoose, Nilgiri Tahr (adjoining areas), Porcupine, Giant Flying Squirrel, Bonner Macaque, Barking Deer, Four-horned Antelope, Otter and Langurs.
The Birds:
Truly a bird's paradise, the sanctuary shelters around 200 birds species. Some endangered bird species are also founded here. Some of the inhabitants include the Crested Hawk Eagles, Crested Serpent Eagle, Malabar Trogon, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Large Racket-Tailed Drongos, Spotted Babbler, Green Pigeons, Brown Dove, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Parakeets, Bulbuls, Cuckoos, Hornbills, Scops Owl, Tiny-eared Owl, Black Woodpecker, Mynas, Barbets, Buzzards, Harriers, Falcons and the King Vulture.
The Reptiles:
Crocodiles, Pythons, Common Krait, Bamboo Pit Snake, turtles, frogs and amphibians are some of the reptiles spotted in the sanctuary.
Best Time to Visit
The most propitious time to visit the sanctuary is from October to February.
