Why Have I Put On So Much Weight?

Question:

I have gained three stone in weight. I'm 5ft 8in tall and my normal weight is ten stone. I had postnatal depression after my second  daughter's birth seven years ago. Two years later I was diagnosed with clinical depression and given Prozac, which I still take. That's when the weight gain started. I also suffered migraines and took beta-blockers for two years. My doctor insists the medication has no bearing on the problem, but I never had any weight problems before. My diet hasn't changed and I go to the gym.

Answer:

There are three types of weight gain: dietary (eating too much fatty, sugary food), hormonal and eating disorders related to emotional problems. I have studied this subject for more than two decades and am now writing a book on it, using an integrated approach.

Judging from what you say, it seems you have a combination of emotional and hormonal problems. As your doctor says, Prozac and beta-blockers (usually prescribed for anxiety-related headaches) may not be the trigger, but if your weight gain is a side effect of one or both of these drugs, the advice I give below will help to curb your anxiety and depression and your doctor may be able to help you get off these tablets. But just stopping the tablets may not enable you to get back to your usual weight unless you take some other steps.

The diagnosis of postnatal depression after your second pregnancy makes me think you had problems with the functioning of your pituitary gland, which controls the thyroid and ovaries. This could have been caused by several factors, such as the stress of a new baby, insomnia linked to breast-feeding at night, neck tension or poor nutrition. An under active thyroid causes weight gain and an in-ability to lose the pounds you put on. Poor ovarian function can reduce the level of the reproductive hormone oestrogen. When this happens, the body deposits 'white fat' or cellulite, mainly in the lower abdomen, thighs, buttcks and arms. It does this because the fat produces a form of oestrogen called oestrone. So your body may be laying down fat to compensate for a decline in oestrogen from your ovaries.

Additionally, your feelings of depression may have prompted you to indulge in comfort eating When we're down, we tend to eat chocolate and binge on foods that are high in fats and carbohydrates. Although you believe your diet hasn’t changed, you might find that over the years it has. Also, your extra weight will mean that you tend to slow down and use fewer calories, even if you are exercising.

 I recommend the following

You need to improve the blood supply to the brain so that you can irrigate the hormonal headquarters in the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, where the nerve centre controlling appetite is located. I suggest you ask your partner to massage your neck and shoulders with Lifestyle Massage Oil for ten minutes twice a week. Get professional massages too, if possible. Once the pituitary function improves, your metabolism will change. The extra blood flow will also bring more glucose to the appetite centre so that it feels 'satisfied', which reduces your appetite and any cravings. I hope you find then that you begin to burn up the far.

* Eating slowly helps the taste buds make a wiser decision about how much you eat. So sit down to eat, chew your food well and enjoy it. Have an early evening meal and walk for ten minutes afterwards to help digestion so that the food does not sit in your stomach overnight.

* Acidic and sour foods produce more stomach acid and thus increase appetite. So avoid citrus fruits, pineapple, kiwi, vinegar, pickles, spicy foods, tomato juice and alcohol, which is an appetite stimulant.

* Take regular exercise – at least 30 minutes daily – to improve your metabolism. A brisk walk in the fresh air is fine. Also do therapeutic yoga, particularly the cobra, turtle, semi-bridge and boat poses? and the head roll. I advise joining a class with an experienced teacher.

 Also, try the following Supplements

Stomach Formula: two twice daily for two months, to regulate stomach acid and appetite.

Biorelax : one at bedtime for two months, to calm the nervous system.
