Our Great Grandparents Did Not Need To Go To The Gym

Our great grandparents never had to worry about their bodies being flabby or becoming overweight. They naturally applied their strength and used their muscles actively to get their daily tasks and chores done. No fancy household appliances back then. No washing machines, no vacuum cleaners and meals cooked from scratch without micro waves. Everything took physical effort.

Today, our lives have been made easy and convenient and we can get through each day without using our muscles to any degree. Our lives are sedentary unless we commit to a proper exercise program so our muscles can get the work they need to keep us healthy and control our weight.

Any adult who is serious about getting stronger, losing excess body fat, increasing muscle tone, increasing energy and protection from disease should be strength training. It is your 'body composition' (muscle/fat ratio) that determines how you look, how fast you age and whether you stay healthy and well or invite injury or disease.

When we do regular strength training several important changes happen to our bodies:

1). Metabolism (the body's engine) increases - muscle tissue maintenance requires more fuel (calories) and when the fat burning machinery is fired up even when you are sleeping or resting your muscles are burning more fuel. Rebuilding lost muscle tissue can reverse the problem of becoming overweight at any age.

2). Prevents muscle tissue wasting away - All adults should be concerned about not having enough toned muscle tissue on their bodies especially as they get older. Adults lose one half pound per year up to age 50 then the rate doubles. This siphons strength along with energy levels and drags overall health down with it.

3). Bone density increases - As muscle tissue is lost through inactivity the strength of the bones also is lost. The muscles are attached to the bones and without them pulling vigorously on them while being worked they lose strength and become thin and brittle.

The old 'use it or lose it' scenario. Strength training exercise builds sturdier bones as well as developing stronger joints, ligaments and tendons which adds up to being able to continue enjoying vigorous physical activity throughout all stages of life.

With nice toned muscles your body takes on a rounder, firmer shapelier look. This gives clothes something to hang from and you will look your best. Firm muscles under the skin keep the skin taut like padding in a pillow helping to stop saggy skin and wrinkles. Even the facial muscles get a workout when you put a little effort into a proper strength training program.

These wonderful anti aging benefits are not possible to get from any low intensity 'cardio' type of activity such as walking, jogging or cycling. These activities do not take the muscles through a full range of movement under a load so can not tone the muscles as strength training will.

Having stronger muscles will improve your life in many ways. It is never too late to start and reap the benefits.
