Will over wattage on my aquarium heater hurt anything?
I plan on using two heaters in my saltwater aquarium. it's 55 gal so i need 200 watts or so, but i was wondering if instead of two 100 watt heaters i could go ahead and use 2 200 watt heaters. That way if one did go out it would not hurt anything at all.. Also would there be any advantage to over wattage heaters such as say 250 or 300?
not that it matters but i am planning on using ebo-jager brad heaters
Within reason it is fine.
The larger heaters will just run for less time.
But generally it's better not to go crazy with the heater power because if a thermostat sticks in the 'ON' position it will cook your fish. With 2 x 100w heaters in the tank, if one fails 'OFF' the other will keep the temp close to warm enough. If one fails 'ON' it should not have enough power to cook the fish before you notice.
The Jager heaters are pretty reliable, but it's best to play it safe with expensive marine fish.
